# Would a stranger know this is you?

Paste three things you've published. The Stranger Test reads them with the names stripped off and answers two questions. Could someone tell the **same person** wrote all three? And could they tell **what you sell that nobody else does**?

Five minutes, and you'll know exactly what to fix.

Two verdicts

## You set up custom instructions, and the drafts still come back generic.

It's hard to say exactly why. This tells you, with examples from your own writing.

Verdict one

### Who wrote this?

Whether your three pieces cohere into one identifiable person, and whether that person can be described. Measured on rhythm, punctuation, how you open and close, and the word choice that shows up across all three. You get the fingerprints back as examples from your own writing, or you find out there aren't any.

Verdict two

### What do they sell that nobody else does?

Every claim tested by dropping a competitor's name into the sentence. If it still reads true, it isn't doing any work. You get the interchangeable lines pulled out, the stock phrasing named, and the one claim closest to being yours.

How it works

## Paste, read, decide.

1

### Paste three pieces

A services page, an email, an about page. Names stripped out, because a stranger wouldn't have them either.

2

### Read both verdicts

Every finding comes with examples from your own writing as evidence. No scores you can't check, and it tells you how far the evidence actually goes.

3

### Answer the one question it can't

It describes the writer it found, then asks whether that's you. If the answer is no, that gap is the most useful thing you'll learn all week.

The deliverable

## What comes back

Two verdicts, examples from your own writing as the evidence, and a note on how far that evidence actually goes. Here's a run on an invented company so you can see the shape of it.

Sample report

Who wrote this?

Anonymous

What do they sell that nobody else does?

Interchangeable

**Read this as provisional**One sample clears 600 words and two sit close to the floor, so the rhythm reading is directional rather than settled.

> “We help busy creators reclaim their time and grow with confidence.”

Their words, from the samples pasted in.

### Who wrote this

All three read as the same writer, and that writer has no distinguishing features. Sentence lengths cluster between 14 and 19 words with almost no variation, all three pieces open by naming a frustration, and across 1,412 words not one sentence takes a position anyone could disagree with.

Sample 1

> “We believe every creative deserves systems that work as hard as they do.”

Opens on a belief no competitor would contest. A claim nobody argues with is a claim nobody remembers.

Sample 3

> “Designed for creators who want to work smarter, not harder.”

Generic, stock phrasing. It appears verbatim on thousands of pages selling entirely different things.

### What they sell that nobody else does

Every claim survives a competitor's name being dropped into the sentence. The product is named, the mechanism is not, so a reader finishes the page knowing what Poppyfield sells and nothing about why it would work better than the next one.

Sample 2

> “Our proven framework takes the guesswork out of launching.”

Proven, framework and guesswork, three generic words before a single specific one. The framework is never named or described.

Sample 1

> “We help busy creators reclaim their time and grow with confidence.”

True of a project management app, a VA agency, and a meditation subscription. Closest thing to an ownable claim on the page, and it isn't one yet.

Poppyfield Studio is invented, and so is its copy. Real reports pull examples from your own writing the same way.

Before you start

## What to bring

Two minutes of gathering makes the difference between a real read and a guess.

1. **Three different kinds of writing.** A services or sales page section, an email or newsletter, and an about page or long post. Three of the same type will look consistent because the format is consistent, and that tells you nothing.
2. **At least 300 words each, and 500 is better.** Rhythm is the strongest signal in a voice, and you can't read rhythm off nine sentences.
3. **From the last year.** Older writing tests who you used to be.
4. **Include the ones AI drafted.** If AI wrote it and you barely touched it, paste it anyway. That's the most useful result this produces.
5. **Take the names out.** Yours, your company's, your product's.

**Leave out**Transcripts, bare bullet lists, anything under 300 words, copy somebody else wrote for you, and pure spec or pricing tables. None of it carries a voice.

Pick the pieces you're proudest of. That's the honest version of this test.

Kara ParlinFounder, Firebrand Digital Marketing

For over 25 years I have developed and improved brand messaging for companies from billion-dollar global brands to startups with a product and no story yet. I work from the high-level campaign concept all the way down to the smallest execution detail. The Stranger Test gives your writing the same first read I would. It shows what is recognizably yours, what any competitor could have written, and which of the two you have been publishing more of.

## You already suspect the answer.

Most people do. What you don't have is the evidence, like which sentences gave it away and which claim is the one worth building on.

A vague feeling that your copy is a bit flat doesn't tell you what to fix on Monday. Three examples from your own writing do.
